Current low temperature bank is a complicated system of closely connected with each other trends of the work: these are the scientific elaboration and the improvement of biological objects freezing methods; an adequate estimation of the biological material integrity extent; the organizational and technical measures, providing a long- term storage of biological materials under low temperatures.
At the Institute for Problems of Cryobiology and Cryomedicine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine there has existed for more than 30 years the low temperature bank of biological objects, where 9 collaborators headed by Academician of Academy of Sciences of Ukraine V.I. Grischenko work.
The work of low temperature bank is organised according to the principles of European Tissue Bank Association.
In 2002 by the order of Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine to Low temperature bank was given the status of the National endowment of Ukraine.
Considerable accumulation of various cryopreserved biological objects of embryo fetoplacental complex, of allogeneic and xenogeneic origin, the creation of the biological materials collection: from plant seeds to microorganism strains, became possible at the Institute, where for a long time period there are in progress complex scientific programs on the basis of fundamental investigations in cryobiology.
