In 1981 at the Institute for Problems of Cryobiology and Cryomedicine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine there was established the Specialised Scientific Council to defend the theses for obtaining doctoral degree.
Nowadays two specialties are presented in the Council: Ref. Code 14.01.35 - cryomedicine (medical sciences) and Ref. Code 03.00.19 - cryobiology (biological sciences).
Within the period of Council activity there were defended 37 doctoral and more than 200 PhD theses. The majority of presented and defended works were performed on the base of the Institute for Problems of Cryobiology and Cryomedicine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine where all necessary conditions exist for this purpose. Aiming to prepare the experts on these themes the Post-Graduate course was created at the Institute, where it is annually planned to prepare 10-12 scientists.
Since 1998 the UNESCO chair in cryobiology has been worked at the Institute, at which disposal there is a contemporary scientific and experimental base, allowing to carry-out scientific investigations at the most modern level. Close scientific contacts have been established between the Chair and leading centers of Western Europe, Asian and Pacific Ocean countries. There is a regular exchange with experts, contributing to the widening of cryobiological knowledge, as well as there is performed the teaching for PhD students.
Nowadays the Specialised Scientific Council is the unique one in Ukraine on defending the theses by specialties of cryobiology and cryomedicine. An annual defense of about 10 theses is planned. Highly skilled scientists take part in the Council work, that permits to certify at a high scientific level.
