Institute for Problems of Cryobiology and Cryomedicine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine

The Institute for Problems of Cryobiology and Cryomedicine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was organised in 1972 on the base of two laboratories of the Institute of Low Temperature Physics and Engineering of the National Academy of Sciences of USSR and R&D laboratory for Low Temperature Preservation of Bone Marrow and Blood at Kharkov Institute for Physicians Advanced Training. The Institute has always been a unique establishment of such a rank within Ukraine and NIS.

Being a complex R&D Institution, where in close cooperation physicists and biophysicists, chemists and biochemists, mathematicians and engineers are working together with biologists and medical workers, it counted 47 collaborators, while currently the Institute employs 326 workers, among them 19 doctors of sciences and 116 candidates of sciences. Till the start of 2011 the Institute was headed by Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Valentin I. Grischenko.

The major research interests of the Scientific Departments of the Institute are:

  • Studying the method of cryoinjury, cryoprotection, natural integrity of biological objects to cold and their reparation after a cold effect
  • Creation of effective methods for artificial cryoprotection of biological systems of various organization levels
and on its base working-out the cryopreservation techniques for biological objects and technical means for their realization
  • Use of hypothermia, cryotherapy and cryopreserved biological objects to treat different types of diseases
  • Cell and tissue transplantation.

Institute has wide contacts with scientists from Ukraine, NIS, foreign cryobiological centers of the USA, Great Britain, Germany, India, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Belgium, Netherlands, Israel, Spain, France, Sweden, that enables us to perform complicated programs on reproductive cell cryobiology, cell, tissue, organ preservation, as well as to conduct regular mutual staff training.

Institute per se and also in cooperation with other establishments held two All-USSR conferences (1977, 1984), meeting of cryobiologists of Ukraine (1995), 3 schools for young scientists, 3 International conferences on cryobiology (1983), 1988, 1992, All Ukrainian Scientific Conference (2001). Since 1981 Special Defence Council has been functioning at the Institute (on candidates and doctors' theses defence), where the scientific degree of doctor of sciences was given to 33 scientists, and the degree of a candidate of sciences to 194 ones.

The researchers of the Institute have published more than 2700 scientific publications in leading Ukrainian and foreign journals. The Institute issued 77 manuscripts and collections of scientific works; obtained 170 patents and 236 Author's certificates.

Activity of the Institute researchers was awarded by 5 State Awards in Science and Technology (1of USSR, 3 of the USSR, 1 of Ukraine), 12 scientists are awarded by Personal Awards of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, two scientists were given the honorary title "Man of Science" of Ukraine.

Basing on the fundamental studies accomplished at the Institute, more than 10 scientific projects which are of great significance for medicine and economics were introduced into practice, among those there are the unique ones with no analogues within the world. Human organ, tissue and cell cryopreservation, their long-term storage at low temperature banks enables the use of these biological objects in the therapy of adults and children with such diseases as hematopoiesis aplasia, different types of leukosis, malignant tumors, diabetes, infertility etc. At the Institute there have been created highly efficient methods for artificial cooling of a human being, with the possibility of regulating the level of functional activity at various organism system and, in such a way to promote effectively the recovery from alcohol addictions, poisonings, vegeto-vascular dysfunctions and other diseases.
